Hindustan Times News, New Delhi: Chess Olympiad 2024: This is the first time in the history of Chess Olympiad, that India has won gold medals in both categories (Women-Open). India has never had such success before. India had won the bronze medal in the Chess Olympiad two years ago. Earlier in 2014 also he got bronze medal.
Chess Olympiad: For the first time in the history of Chess Olympiad, India has done something which has never happened before in 97 years. India created history by winning the gold medal in the open division of the Chess Olympiad on the strength of D Gukesh and Arjun Arigesi. Apart from this, India has also won the gold medal in the women’s category. On the other hand, Gukesh has also won the gold medal in the individual event. Thus India has won 3 gold medals.
This is the first time that India has won gold medals in both the categories in Chess Olympiad. In the 45th Chess Olympiad being played in Budapest, Hungary, Gukesh defeated Vladimir Fedosev, while Erigesi defeated Jan Subel.
Gukesh won the Chess Olympiad for the second time in a row
18-year-old D Gukesh has created history by winning the gold medal for the second time in a row. He has achieved this success in individual competitions. Earlier he won the gold medal in 2022 Chess Olympiad. After Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, Gukesh became the second Indian to win two consecutive gold medals. Also became the 16th World Chess Master.
Indian men only needed a draw in the last round to secure first place in the division. But India won two matches, while second-placed China lost points against the US.
The Indian men’s team consisted of D Gukesh, Arjun Elegacy, Vidit Gujarati, Pantala Harikrishna, R Pragyanand and Srinath Narayanan. In the women’s section, India defeated Azerbaijan by 3.5-0.5 in the last match. The women’s team consists of Harika Dronavalli, Vaishali Rameshbabu, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Aggarwal, Tania Sachdev and Abhijeet Kunte.
