Russia can remove Taliban from terrorist list
Moscow The State Duma, the lower house of the Russian Parliament, has passed a law giving the courts the power to remove any organization from the list of terrorist groups. With the passing of this law, it will now become easier for Russia to establish diplomatic relations with Afghan Taliban and Syrian rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
According to this law passed on Tuesday, if any organization stops activities related to terrorism, then it can be removed from this list. Under this law, the Prosecutor General of Russia can file an appeal in the court. In this appeal it will be told that some banned organization has stopped terrorist activities.
After this, if the judge wishes, he can take a decision to remove that organization from the list of terrorist organizations.
Russia included Taliban in 2003 and HTS in the list of terrorist organizations in 2020.
Putin called Taliban an ally in fighting terrorism
The Taliban captured power in Afghanistan in August 2021. After which no country has yet given formal recognition to the Taliban government.
However, in July this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin had now called the Taliban an ally in fighting terrorism.
Putin had said during the SCO summit in Kazakhstan in July 2024-
We should assume that the Taliban controls power in Afghanistan. In this regard, Taliban is our ally in the fight against terrorism.
In May this year, Russia had decided to remove Taliban from the list of banned terrorist organizations. Then Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had said that Taliban is the real power. We are no different from them. Our allies in Central Asia are no different.
Demand to remove HTS from banned list
On the other hand, there is a demand to remove Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which overthrew Bashar al-Assad in Syria, from this list.
After the coup in Syria, Russia's statements regarding HTS have completely changed. Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had called the Syrian rebels terrorists, but the very next day after the coup, the Russian Foreign Ministry called them the opposition in an officially released statement.
Let us tell you that the rebellion against Bashar al-Assad started in Syria on 27 November this year, after which 11 days i.e. on 8 December, the power of the Assad family was abolished.
