In today’s world, living without a mobile phone or electronic gadgets seems almost impossible. These devices have become an essential part of daily life. But imagine a competition where the condition is to spend 8 hours without using any mobile or electronic devices, and if you manage to do so, you win a prize.
A Unique Competition in China
According to a report by the South China Morning Post, on November 29, a unique competition was held in Chongqing, China. Participants were required to spend 8 hours without using mobile phones, laptops, iPads, or any electronic devices. During this time, they were only allowed to leave their bed for a toilet break, and even that was limited to just 5 minutes.
Conditions for Winning
Over 100 people participated in the competition, which took place inside a bedding store in a mall. The challenge was that participants could not fall into deep sleep or show any signs of discomfort or stress. They wore straps on their wrists that monitored their stress and anxiety levels. Throughout the competition, 9 participants dropped out, but one woman performed exceptionally well, scoring 88.99 out of 100 and emerged as the winner. She won a cash prize of 10,000 yuan (approximately 1.2 lakh INR).
According to the organizers, the woman did not fall into a deep sleep, spent adequate time on the bed, and took minimal toilet breaks. The winner revealed that she teaches children in her spare time and always tries to minimize the use of mobile phones and electronic devices. The goal of this unique competition was to encourage people to learn how to spend time without relying on technology.
Why Digital Detox is Becoming Necessary!
This is not the first time China has promoted living without mobile phones and electronic devices. Such campaigns are often organized in the country. Earlier this year, a Chinese PhD student studying in the UK traveled across 24 major provinces of China for 134 days without using any electronic devices.
South Korea’s ‘Space-Out Competition’
In South Korea, the ‘Space-Out Competition’ has been held since 2014. In this competition, people sit on wet yoga mats in crowded places in Seoul, doing nothing but staring into empty space. The only condition of the competition is that participants cannot do anything or fall asleep.
